The Bibliothèque Nationale de France has a digital library containing over 4 million documents which was established in 1997. Here you can search books, manuscripts, images, sound files and newspapers. Some content is free to access, and whilst it is all in French, there are English search tools to help you navigate.

The ‘Papers Past’ site is part of the National Library of New Zealand. The pages are free and available to anyone who wishes to search the archive of periodicals and newspapers covering the period from 1839 to 1945.
Both Australian and New Zealand newspapers are featured. Much of the news relates to British topics too, so the site can also be a good way to get a new perspective on British news,
